Bonjour, my beautiful buttered biscuits of bafflementâ
Today I found myself peeling a banana and wondering:
Is love real?
Or is it just the most elaborate magic trick humanity ever pulled on itself?
Think about it.
From the moment weâre tiny little hairy mammals, the world starts handing us love propaganda like free samples at a supermarket. Romance novels. Hollywood kisses in the rain. Songs so sugary they give your soul cavities. All whispering:
âFind your other halfâor be doomed to a life of soggy microwave dinners and dying alone, probably in a bathrobe.â
I mean⊠who wrote this script? And did they ever consider that some of us like microwave dinners?

What if love, in its mainstream form, is just really good branding for the wedding industry?
A lifelong ad campaign that makes you believe youâre not complete unless youâre part of a matching set. Like salt and pepper. Socks. The two members of Wham!
Let's not forget all the products we buy while in this pursuit⊠from Valentine's Day cards to chocolates to candle light dinner reservations at restaurants you'd probably never go by yourself⊠and all the flowers, the gifts, the jewelry, the tickets to movies, concerts, amusement parks, the trips⊠and ultimately the church rental, the wedding dress, the ring, the invitations, the catering, the liquor, the cake, the photographer, the after party, the late night pizza⊠just think of all the bananas you could buy with all that money?Â
But hereâs a spicy little counter-thought:
Some of usâbrace yourselvesâlike being alone.
Yes! We exist. We solo-stroll through museums. We eat both sides of the pizza. We hog all the blanket and donât apologize to anyone.
đïž Alone â Lonely
Being alone doesnât mean being unloved.
It doesnât mean bitterly watching Hallmark movies while sharpening knives (unless thatâs your hobby, in which case, no judgment).
It means choosing the luxury of your own rhythm.
It means not needing to share fries if you donât feel like it.
It means scheduling your cuddles, and canceling them guilt-free.

Maybe romantic love is real. Maybe itâs glorious and chaotic and shaped like a spoon bent by a psychic during intermission.
But maybe, just maybe, the real illusion is thinking we need it to be whole.
So whether youâre head over heels, in a complicated situationship with your neighborâs cousin, or blissfully whispering sweet nothings to your air fryerâremember this:
The truest kind of love might just be the one you have for yourself.
Especially if you bring snacks.
So here's a song to enjoy those snacks with while contemplating love, from the unreleased vault of music tracks and bananas.
With affection,
Marcel Du Chimp đ·
