Marcel Du Chimp’s Blog #35: Swinging into the Magic Castle 🐒✨🎩

Ooo-ooo-ooo! Marcel here, my human-people friends, and let me tell ya, January 22nd was a night to remember! I got to strut my fuzzy self into the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, all thanks to the one and only Dr. K. He’s doing his thing there this week, wowing audiences, and decided to invite little ol’ me along. Lucky chimp, huh?

Now, before we talk tricks and jaw-droppers, let me address the fire elephant in the room. Yes, a new brush fire broke out that night near Bel-Air, UCLA, and the Getty Museum, but from the Magic Castle’s vantage point, the skies were clear, and the air smelled more like mystery than smoke. The magic wasn’t just inside—it felt like it was holding back the chaos outside.

And oh, what magic it was! Picture this: velvet carpets, shadowy corners, and a cheeky energy in the air. It was like stepping into a jungle of wonder and trickery. Dr. K introduced me to a band of magical misfits from around the world:

• Yang Yang from Tianjin, China—this guy’s stage manipulation act was world class! 
• Ming Da from Singapore, who had a magic mirror that could produce coins from thin air!
• Rod Chow from Vancouver, Canada, who wore a metal tie! Yes, a tie made from metal!
• David Shao from LA, the virgin magician whose magic act also involved a dance with a chair and pulling up the skirt he was wearing... yes, he wore a skirt.
• Kenji Minemura who made elegance look so easy, breathing life into a little doll.
• FUKAI from Japan, one of the funniest magic acts I've ever seen!

And then, drumroll, please… Juliana Chen! This dazzling queen of magic, originally from China but now ruling Las Vegas, absolutely stole the show.

With a playful elegance, she called up an audience member to tie her up with ropes. Now, I know what you’re thinking—kinky monkey business? No, no, no, my friends, this was magic. At the count of 3, she somehow managed to get the guy’s suit jacket off and onto herself, while tied up the whole time! I mean, WHAT?!

Juliana moves so gracefully it was like watching a ballerina. And surprise, surprise—that’s how she started her career! She also went to train in the circus to be an acrobat, but a knee injury ended her dancing and tumbling days, that's when she found her way to magic. The result? She became the first Chinese and first woman to win the gold prize at FISM—basically the Olympics of magic!

The whole night was a whirlwind of wonder. While L.A. dealt with another fire, the Magic Castle was a haven of amazement and delight. I left there thinking about how magic—like music—has this incredible way of bringing us together, crossing social and cultural boundaries, and making us believe in the impossible.
