Bananas. That’s what I thought when I saw the news. A statue appeared on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Not Lincoln, not Washington, not even Elvis… but a bronze tableau of two billionaires, hand in hand, grinning like they just won the last pair of discount sneakers at Macy’s. And then—poof!—it was gone the very next day.
The anonymous tricksters behind it call themselves Secret Handshake. Perfect name. Because the whole thing was a secret handshake—between power, money, and the absurd. It looked like high art, felt like a prank, and smelled… irony.
And me? I couldn’t resist.
I pulled out my little chimp-sized keyboard (67 keys, all sticky from banana peels), and a song tumbled out. A patter tune. A satire. A sugar-coated anthem to “Friendship Month” that melts halfway through and leaves a bitter aftertaste that is the flavour of the time we live in.
I called it “Just Two Guys.”
Why? Because the statue wasn’t just about two guys. It was about all of us. Our fascination with fame, our tolerance for hypocrisy, and the way history can turn someone's tragedy into an absurd slapstick right before our eyes.
The reality we live in resembles more and more the plot of a musical farce. I'm just happy to be able to provide some of the sound track to this priceless you-can't-even-make-it-up story!
The statue may be gone, but the memory, the satire, and the absurdity—are all immortalized by the lyrics in the familiar sounding melody over this standard chord progression. And maybe, years from now, when people look back on this period in American history, they’ll hum a few bars of “Just Two Guys” and say: “Wow. Marcel was right! That was bananas.”
Happy Friendship Month, everyone.
