🍌🎶#65 One man's trash is another man's violin!

So I’ve been riding on Rosy’s fancy musician coat-tails lately (Yes, the ROSY as in Rosyland!) — sneaking into all these big-banana music events in Toronto, thanks to the Glenn Gould Foundation’s “Celebration of Music Week.”
There were clever humans everywhere — professors, producers, pianists with coffee breath — talking about the future of music, art, and civilization (no big deal).

But the one thing that totally short-circuited my little chimp brain wasn’t a shiny grand piano or a ten-page theory on harmony...
It was a bunch of kids from Paraguay.
Playing instruments made out of trash.

    🥫🎺 Garbage into Gold

They call themselves the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura — young musicians who live next to a landfill in Asunción, Paraguay, and play violins made from oil cans, flutes made from drainpipes, and cellos patched together from literal garbage.

    Their motto?

“The world sends us garbage… we send back music.”

    And they mean it.

These kids are swingin’. They sound raw, alive, imperfect in the best possible way — like the Earth herself humming through tin and wood and rust. They make art out of leftovers, melody out of mayhem. It’s jazz at its purest form: improvisation as survival.

🌍🎵 The Night That Hit Me Like a Cymbal

There I was, sitting in the dark at the conference, banana peel in pocket (don’t judge), when the lights dimmed and a group of young musicians walked on stage, confident, understated… until the orchestra started playing: Wow! The music was very powerful! Especially knowing that all the sounds are made from things that were put together from scraps!

I saw those kids holding instruments built from things the rest of the world had thrown away — and suddenly I felt this weird lump in my throat. (not a banana this time.)

    It was beautiful.
It wasn’t just a concert. It was an act of rebellion wrapped in harmony.

They weren’t saying, “Look at us!”
They were saying, “Look at what you threw away… and listen to how it still sings.”

    💭🍽️ Food for Thought, Indeed

I left thinking — hey, maybe that’s what music really is.
Taking the noise of life — the broken, discarded, ignored bits — and arranging them into something that makes people feel again.

So here’s to the kids of Cateura — the real avant-garde.
They remind us that beauty doesn’t come from having the finest instruments or the fanciest studios. It comes from the courage to play — anyway.

Next time you throw something out, ask yourself:
    Can it sing?
    Can it swing?
Can it maybe, just maybe, become part of the world’s next great symphony?

Because if a trash can can become a cello… maybe there’s hope for the rest of us too.
